If you keep seeing 'lash lift' everywhere but aren't quite sure what it actually involves or whether it's safe, this is for you. I'll explain everything plainly, without the jargon.
What is a lash lift?
A lash lift is a semi-permanent treatment that curls your natural lashes upward from the root, giving them a longer, more open, more awake appearance. It's often described as a perm for your lashes — which is technically accurate, though it sounds more alarming than it is.
The treatment usually includes a lash tint, which adds depth and colour to the lashes so they look darker and more defined — similar to wearing mascara, but without any product on them.
You may have also noticed the Korean Lash Lift trend floating around on Social Media. This in essence, is the same process (with a few tweaks) but uses a different product.
How does it work?
A silicone shield is placed on your eyelid, and your lashes are carefully lifted and set onto it. A lifting solution is then applied to the lashes, which gently restructures the protein bonds in the hair — similar to how a perm works on the hair on your head. A setting solution locks the new shape in place, and then a nourishing treatment is applied to condition the lashes.
The whole process takes around 45–60 minutes. Most clients find it extremely relaxing.
How long does a lash lift last?
A lash lift typically lasts 6–8 weeks, gradually growing out with your natural lash cycle. Most clients find they want to re-book at around the 8-week mark. Butterfly Beauty offers a mid-point maintenance appointment to refresh and condition the lash, adding tint to maintain the perfect look.
Is it safe?
When performed by a qualified, experienced therapist, a lash lift is very safe. The solutions used are formulated specifically for use near the eye area.
There are a few things to be aware of:
• A patch test is always recommended before your first treatment — I do this as standard at Butterfly Beauty.
• It's not recommended if you have a current eye infection, very damaged lashes, or certain eye conditions — I'll always check before treatment and you'll be asked to complete a consultation form to identify your medical history.
• Results depend significantly on the skill of the therapist — lashes that are over-processed can become frizzy or damaged, which is why choosing a qualified professional matters.
Who is a lash lift suitable for?
Most people with natural lashes are suitable candidates. It works particularly well if your natural lashes are straight, downward-pointing, or simply lacking definition. If your lashes are already very curly, we'd discuss whether a lift would give you much additional benefit.
It's not suitable for use on lash extensions, pregnant or breast-feeding women or under 16s.
What to expect at your appointment
At Butterfly Beauty, every lash lift starts with a short consultation so I can assess your lashes and make sure the treatment is right for you. I'll talk you through what I'm doing at each stage — because I genuinely believe you should leave knowing more than when you arrived.
Aftercare is simple: avoid getting your lashes wet for 24 hours, avoid oil-based products near the eye, and sleep on your back for the first night if you can. After that, you're free to do whatever you like with them — including nothing, which is rather the point.
