How Often Should You Get a Facial?

This is one of those questions where I could easily tell you "every four weeks" and leave it at that — because, yes, that would be great for my booking diary. But it's not the answer that's right for everyone, and I'd rather give you the honest version.
The biology behind the answer
Your skin has a natural renewal cycle. Skin cells are produced in the deeper layers and gradually travel to the surface, where they eventually shed. This cycle takes approximately 28 days in younger skin — though it slows down as we age, sometimes stretching to 45–60 days by the time we're in our 40s and 50s.
This is why monthly facials make biological sense. A facial at the end of each skin cycle helps to clear away the buildup of dead cells that your skin hasn't shed efficiently, treat the concerns that have developed in that cycle, and support the fresh skin coming through.
But does everyone need one every four weeks?
Honestly? No. And any therapist worth their salt will tell you the same.
If you have healthy, balanced skin and a good home routine that you're consistent with, you can absolutely stretch to every 6–8 weeks. Your skin will still be in good condition. You'll just be maintaining rather than treating.
Where monthly facials make a real difference is if you're working on a specific concern — congestion, pigmentation, dehydration, the early signs of ageing, or stress-related breakouts. In those cases, consistency matters. One facial won't transform your skin. A series of them, treating the same concern at the right intervals, will.
Signs you probably need one sooner rather than later
• Your skin looks dull no matter how much water you drink
• Your moisturiser doesn't seem to be absorbing properly
• You're getting more congestion or breakouts than usual
• Your skin feels rough or uneven to the touch
• You've been under a lot of stress recently
• The seasons have changed and your skin hasn't caught up
What about if you've never had a facial before?
Start with a consultation. I offer a free 20-minute skin consultation at Butterfly Beauty precisely because I'd rather understand your skin before recommending a treatment — not after. Some people come in expecting to need a monthly routine and leave realising a seasonal facial is plenty. Others come in thinking they only need something occasional and discover their skin is actually screaming for more regular attention.
Your skin is different every season. What it needs in January is not what it needs in July. That's the honest answer — and the one I'll always give you.
Book a free skin consultation at Butterfly Beauty in Bridgend and find out exactly what your skin needs — and what it doesn't.
