Lash Lift vs Lash Extensions — Which Is Better for Me?

If you've been going back and forth between a lash lift and lash extensions, you're asking the right question — because they really are quite different treatments with very different commitments. Here's everything you need to know to make the right choice for you.
What is a lash lift?
A lash lift is a semi-permanent treatment that curls and lifts your natural lashes from the root. Think of it as a perm for your lashes — your own lashes, just woken up. It's usually combined with a lash tint to add depth and make the lift even more dramatic.
The result looks like you're wearing mascara. But better, because you're not.
What are lash extensions?
Lash extensions are individual synthetic lashes applied one by one (or in small clusters) to your natural lashes using a semi-permanent glue. They add length, volume, and drama beyond what your natural lashes can do alone.
The honest comparison
Results
Lash lift: natural, lifted, mascara-without-mascara look. Best for people who like a natural enhancement.
Extensions: more dramatic length and volume. Best for people who want a full, glamorous lash look.
Maintenance
Lash lift: virtually none. Avoid getting them wet for 24 hours after the treatment, avoid oil-based products near your eyes, and sleep on your back if possible for the first night. After that, you're free. They last 6–8 weeks.
Extensions: significant. You need infills every 2–3 weeks as your natural lashes shed and the extensions grow out. You must avoid oil-based eye products, be careful sleeping, and be gentle when cleaning your eye area. Miss too many infills and you'll need a full set again.
Cost over time
Lash lift: lower ongoing cost. One treatment every 6–8 weeks.
Extensions: higher ongoing cost due to regular infills. A full set plus regular infills adds up significantly over the year.
Health of your natural lashes
Lash lift: no impact on lash health when done correctly by a qualified therapist.
Extensions: can cause lash thinning or loss over time if not applied correctly or if aftercare is poor. Always go to a qualified therapist.
Who is each one right for?
Choose a lash lift if you want low-maintenance, natural-looking results, have healthy natural lashes, and don't want to think about your lashes every few weeks.
Choose extensions if you want maximum drama and volume, don't mind the maintenance commitment, and are consistent with aftercare.
My honest recommendation
For most of the clients I see — busy women, mums, people who want to look great without having to think about it — a lash lift is the better choice. It's low maintenance, it's affordable, it looks gorgeous, and it works with your natural lashes rather than on top of them.
But if you're preparing for a wedding, a special occasion, or you simply want the full glam look? Extensions are incredible. You just need to be committed to the upkeep.
The best thing you can do is have a conversation with a therapist who will be honest about what's right for your lashes — not just what's most profitable. That's always what you'll get from me.
